The JS Cotman Project began in March 2017 with our on site mental health group, Studio 3. This was a new project to us and brings us into partnership with Leeds Art Gallery to explore the extensive archive of John Sell Cotman. It’s early days for the project but so far we have had Tea With The Curator (Theodore Wilkins) to explore the work of Cotman first hand and a behind the scenes visit to the gallery archive.
Over the next eight weeks, the group will visit sites which Cotman painted and produce their own interpretations and responses to his work, culminating in an exhibition later in the year. There will also be blog posts documenting the project as it develops.
We’re excited to be working directly with the gallery and to have access to such an important archive. The project is supported by artists Rozi Fuller and Jill Johnson and we’re looking forward to seeing where this project will lead and the artwork produced!
Below you will see images from these first two workshops as the group explore and familiarise themselves with this leading figure from the Norwich School of Artists.
